Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $400,636)
The Technology Innovation for Public Safety (TIPS) Program is funded under the statutory set aside for precipitous increase in crime (42 U.S.C. § 3756(b)(1)) to assist state, local, and tribal jurisdictions in enhancing their information-sharing capacity through the use of innovative technological solutions to effectively address disproportionate and precipitous increases in crime. Funding for this program is available under two categories. Category 1 - Innovative Technology Implementation to Address Precipitous Increases in Crime will enhance strategic information sharing across crime-fighting agencies to address specific local or regional crime problems.
St. Louis County Government, St. Louis County Police Department will utilize TIPS 2016 to acquire SSTs ShotSpotter technology to reduce gun violence in the Castle Point and surrounding neighborhoods of North St. Louis County. The data obtained from the system will be directed in real-time to officers patrolling to apprehend individuals in the act of shooting guns or illegally carrying guns. The data will later be shared with Federal and local law enforcement partners along with social service organizations to further investigations and address some of the root issues associated with interpersonal conflict and gun violence.
