Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $4,270,957)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety will use Fiscal Year 2015 JAG funds to support state and local criminal justice initiatives such as technology, personnel, equipment and training. Law enforcement initiatives include: twenty-one county prosecutor gang, gun, and narcotic task forces; New Jersey State police organized crime, gangs, guns and narcotics task force; the multi-jurisdictional gangs, guns, and narcotics task force; Atlantic City organized crime task force; Division of Criminal Justice narcotics training grant; body worn camera initiative, New Jersey State police ballistic unit; County Prosecutors Megans Law and local law enforcement initiative; Megans Law coordinator; and criminal justice information systems. The project goals are to reduce violent crime, illegal gun possession and narcotics distribution through investigation and prosecution; to provide criminal justice resources and improve data sharing capabilities among criminal justice agencies.
