Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $70,362)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO)will utilize their funds to replace four portable radios with a new model including encryption. Funds will be used to purchase encryption software to support the new radios. MCSO will also purchase seven new overhead mount gun locks will provide better safety for deputies as well as the public.

Sioux Falls Police Department will use funds for a fully equipped vendor trailer. The trailer is based on a concession trailer so that it has side openings to present a mobile office that officers can work from. The trailer will be used by uniform patrol in problem areas to increase visibility and to act as a mobile substation for officers to engage the public from. Computers would be included with the purchase to allow the officers to take reports, provide current information on cases, and look up information related to the event they are engaged in. Part of the money used would include graphics for the trailer as well as desk and storage area inside. The Sioux Falls Police Department will also purchase gas masks. Gas mask are issued to officers in case of public disturbances, terrorist attacks, or social unrest. The Sioux Falls Police Department intends to purchase 50 new gas mask for their uniformed services division.
