Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $22,006)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Minnesota Chippewa Tribe will divide the funding equally among three of the six reservationÂ’s law enforcement programs. The funding will be used to support the White Earth Reservation for an in-squad car camera and to maintain police officer miscellaneous duty gear supplies. Funds will also support the Bois Forte (Nett Lake) Reservation with computer software and hardware to upgrade an outdated fingerprint system to a newer ten-print Live Scan with Graphic User Interface fingerprint machine. Finally, funds will also support the Fond du Lac Reservation with the acquisition of a Thermal Imager and ProTech Tactical Intruder HS Shield with Light. This is a ballistic shield would be used for high risk warrants, barricade armed subjects, hostage situations, or active shooters.
