The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The grantee will use this JAG award purchase a fully equipped voice over mail telephone system for the Police Department. This innovative telephone system will be used primarily for the dispatch department; however, the entire police department will benefit in its regular function to assist the officer to answer calls for service, traffic enforcement, and patrolling our jurisdiction in a more effective and timely manner, as well as the most effective features of track calls and play back, which both are very essential requirements for the communications section. Officers are on the frontline of combating crime and also providing community policing on a 24/7 basis; through this initiative, the dispatchers will be able to route and distributed calls to the administrative staff, records, property bureau, and detective unit without much interference from the very high volume officers job, creating the tools necessary to perform his/her duties.
