Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2016, $525,487)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following program areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

Fiscal Year 2016 JAG funds will be used by South Dakota to continue funding state and local initiatives in the following priority purpose areas: law enforcement; prosecution and court; and corrections and community corrections programs. The need has been determined from a historical basis of what has been funded in the past, the annual state budgeting process, and available funds.
More specifically, JAG funds will be used to: 1. Increase the manpower and other resources needed to address the drug and violent crime issues facing the law enforcement community in the State;
2. Increase the manpower and other resources needed to address the drug and violent crime issues facing the prosecution community in the State;
3. Increase the manpower and other resources needed to address needs identified in the correctional community in the State; and
4. Provide training and resources for the Highway Patrol.
