Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $108,332)

The Hawaii Department of the Attorney General is requesting, to support the Department of the Medical Examiner of the City and County of Honolulu (ME) and the Honolulu Police Department Scientific Investigations Section (HPD­SIS).

A modicum of funding will be used by the ME to fund medicolegal death investigation systems to facilitate accreditation of the medical examiner office and certification of medico legal death investigators.

Grant funds will also enable the ME to increase the number of death investigators who are certified by ABDMI from two (2) to six (6) by the end of the project period.

Funds will be subawarded to HPD-SIS who will utilize grant funds to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services in the State by: (1) providing continuing education to nine (9) SIS members; and (2) extend five (5) training opportunities to forensic scientists from other law enforcement agencies in the state.

Finally, funds will be used to support administrative costs for the Department of the Attorney General as the SAA, for travel and attendance at the statewide forensic laboratory meetings held on Oahu, on-site monitoring visits as applicable, and travel and registration costs for one Criminal Justice Planning Specialist to attend a forensic science conference.
