Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $267,391)

The North Dakota Office of Attorney General - Crime Laboratory Division provides scientific support to the state's criminal justice system by the use of accepted techniques in the analysis, identification, and comparison of physical and toxicological evidence.

As a full service accredited facility, the North Dakota Crime Laboratory employees 26 staff members specializing in the areas of Biology (DNA), Drug Chemistry (Controlled Substance), Fingerprints, Firearms, Toxicology, and Fire Debris analysis. The ND Crime Lab is committed to providing quality results on forensic exams in a timely manner.

Funding from this award will allow the ND Crime Lab the ability to purchase supplies for in-house DNA analysis of casework and offender samples and to provide continuing education for DNA laboratory analysts.

Funding from this award will also allow us to outsource our property crime cases, in an effort to reduce our turn-around time on all DNA cases to 60 days or less. The 2017 DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program continues to be a great program in that it will not only allow our lab to continue to provide quality services to the citizens of North Dakota, but will also help us to achieve our professional goals.
