Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $750,000)
The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection will use this funding to replace the traditional serological screening of sexual assault cases with a DNA screening method that directly detects Y chromosomal DNA.
Process mapping of the current and proposed methods for processing sexual assault cases indicates that the adoption of Y-screening will reduce the time to screen a sexual assault case by about 1.75 hours per kit. The project will hire and train a grant-funded Foensic Examiner; validate the testing of the Y-screening technique; and implement new operating procedures and testing.
