Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $101,003)

The Jefferson County Regional Crime Laboratory (JCRCL) seeks to reduce its backlog in firearms examination cases through this project. In 2017, JCRCL saw a 152 percent increase in firearms cases from 73 in 2016, to 184 in 2017.

At present, there is only one full-time Firearms Examiner; other lab staff members are being cross-trained to assist with addressing the case backlog. This grant request includes overtime for the Firearms Examiner to work on backlogged cases, an additional comparison microscope for the newly trained staff member to utilize to assist with firearms cases, and training for the Firearms Examiner and the newly trained staff member. We expect to reduce the backlog by 30 percent, and the turn-around time by 25 percent over the one-year grant period.
