Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $193,564)

The goal of this two year project is two-fold: 1) enhance the processing, recording, screening, and analysis of forensic DNA samples; and 2) increase the capacity of the police department’s forensic DNA laboratory to process more DNA samples – thus helping to reduce the number of forensic DNA samples awaiting analysis and deliver more timely results to investigators.

Funding will address the recommendations of the forensic DNA laboratory’s recent Lean Six Sigma efficiency project through the purchase of laboratory equipment, technology, and contractual services to increase lab capacity and streamline casework. Funding will also support continuing education for laboratory personnel to ensure they meet professional DNA Quality Assurance Standards, as established by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the purchase of supplies and other equipment to support the operation of the lab to improve quality and timeliness.
