Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $288,263)

The North Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory (NLCL) provides high quality criminalistics services to law enforcement and criminal justice agencies within 29 parishes of the state of Louisiana.
The NLCL currently has six fully trained analysts and two analysts in training. The two analysts in training are expected to be released for casework prior to the start date of this award. Although the size of the DNA staff has increased, the NLCL is still experiencing a growing number of new cases and a large backlog.
The NLCL is requesting funds to increase the capacity to process more DNA samples and reduce the number of DNA samples awaiting analysis. The lab is proposing to purchase additional lab equipment, replace malfunctioning existing equipment, introduce a probabilistic genotyping system, maintain an online-based workflow manager, and provide the required FBI QAS continuing education for eight DNA analysts.
