Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $288,549)

The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME) completed a Lean Six Sigma project previously that concluded their analysts only spend 21% of their time performing testing and processing casework. Through this project, the ACOME proposes to hire three contract employees to perform a lot of the other essential, non-value-added tasks critical to case management and quality control that the scientists now have to perform. Additionally, these contract employees will help streamline interactions to ensure that the vested parties hear the consistent, task related information required to complete their work, improving efficiency and helping to mitigate cognitive bias. The ACOME will demonstrate the quantity of task irrelevant information screened in the process by these contract positions and a similar model can be applied to other forensic agencies.
