Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $61,712)

The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) is requesting funding to obtain the NAME accreditation, to hire a quality assurance consultant and to allow Deputy Coroners to obtain American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigation certification (ABMDI). These areas work together to strengthen the credibility of MCCO and allow the Agency to better serve the community. By applying NAME standards, it will aid in the development and maintenance of a high caliber office operation. To further comply with NAME standards, the eligible MCCO Deputy Coroners will obtain ABMDI certification. NAME and ABMDI accreditation will ensure that MCCO operates each death scene to national standards, which in turn will better aid prosecutors. The accreditation will also attract prospective forensic pathologists and death investigators to be employed at a high-caliber office.
