Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $100,000)

The United States is experiencing a severe shortage of board-certified forensic pathologists. Currently, there is an estimated 500 board-certified forensic pathologists working compared to the recommended range of 1,100-1,200. This critical shortage may undermine the local, state, and federal criminal justice systems with the lack of forensic pathologists to perform examinations in a timely manner. The Broward County Office of Medical Examiner & Trauma Services (BCOMETS) requests funding to train one full-time Forensic Pathology Fellow to help offset the critical shortage of forensic pathologists in this country.

In addition to performing over 200 autopsies, the fellow will participate in crime scene investigations, toxicology interpretations, courtroom and deposition testimonies, countywide trauma services meetings and will actively become an integral participant.
