Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $272,275)

The Department of the Attorney General of Hawaii is seeking funding through the 2019 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program (Coverdell) to improve and enhance the quality and timeliness of forensic science services in Hawaii. The funding will support the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) Scientific Investigations Section (SIS), Hawaii Police Department (HiPD) Crime Scene Lab, and the Kauai Police Department (KPD) Crime Scene and Laboratory Unit. HPD will use funding to improve the timeliness of its work by providing three continuing education opportunities forensic personnel, and to extend training opportunities to forensic scientists from other law enforcement agencies in the state. HiPD will utilize grant funds to address issues related to update their crime lab data management system by purchasing and implementing LIMS, as well as preparing the crime scene unit for accreditation within two years. KPD plans to contract with ASCLD AAI for forensic accreditation mentoring services to aid in accreditation preparation. Grant funds will enable KPD to establish a quality assurance program and submit an application to ANAB for crime scene accreditation by December 2020. NCA/NCF
