The West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory (WVSPFL) is an accredited, full-service facility charged with the responsibility of analyzing evidentiary material associated with criminal investigations for all state and local law enforcement in West Virginia. This project is designed to provide continuing education and certification to analysts within the WVSPFL and provide equipment to analysts and technicians to perform forensic testing. The objective is to improve both the quality and timeliness of the services provided by the WVSPFL, including successful management of the increased service requests resulting from the growing opioid epidemic. The federal funding from the FY 2019 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grant Program will be used for the following goals: 1) provide analysts continuing education and to maintain individual certification; 2) provide scientists with certification opportunities to improve expertise; and 3) provide scientists with the equipment necessary to perform their testing and other duties more efficiently and effectively.
