Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $431,371)

The Washington State Forensic Investigations Council promotes the achievement of excellence in the delivery of forensic science services at the state and local level for the citizens of Washington State. The Council requests funding for eight sub-projects to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science and medical examiner services across the state. Subprojects are: 1) King County Medical Examiner will extend an existing real-time surveillance project into a statewide fatal drug overdose surveillance network; 2) Lewis County Coroner will purchase alternate light source kits; 3) Okanogan County Coroner will purchase a manual hydraulic scissor lift for the morgue; 4) Spokane County Medical Examiner will purchase monitors and wall mounts for visualization of whole body X-ray scans prior to and during autopsy; 5) Thurston County Coroner will fund the American Board of Internal Medicine application and exam costs, and a 12-month internship to update protocols, compliance with national standards, and improve efficiency; 6) The Washington State Patrol (WSP) Crime Laboratory Division will purchase a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometry Data Instrument; 7) WSP Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit (MUPU) will support training, consultant services, and purchase equipment necessary for timeliness and quality of MUPU services; and 8=) WSP Toxicology Laboratory will purchase one year’s supply of evidence kits for toxicology case submissions by Medical Examiners/Coroners.
