The Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Assistance (OCJA) is requesting funds under the FY19 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants program to support three forensic science laboratories in the state: the Henderson Police Forensic Laboratory, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Forensic Laboratory, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Division. The Henderson Police Laboratory will use funds to purchase a new gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer for the controlled substances unit. The Las Vegas laboratory will use funds for overtime to reduce the number of backlogged cases awaiting entry into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and for training for forensic scientific personnel. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office laboratory will use funds to support forensic scientist training and continuing education programs.
