Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $272,275)

The Maine Department of Public Safety requests funding under the FFY 2019 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Formula Program to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services provided by the Maine State Police (MSP) Crime Laboratory, the forensic analysis of controlled substances by the Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL) and medical-legal death investigation services by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). The funds will be used for specialized training in the forensic disciplines of crime scene investigations and controlled substances; to purchase a forensic laser system for the Latent Print Section; to purchase a stereoscope for the Forensic Chemistry section; to purchase tablets, keyboards, and stylus pencils for the Evidence Response Team; to purchase a Fourier-transform Spectroscopy (FTIR) unit for the HETL; to purchase a benchtop centrifuge for the HETL; to purchase barrier protective clothing for the OCME staff members; and to purchase urine field test kits for the OCME that include a 12-panel test plus a single panel test specifically for Fentanyl and Carfentanil.
