Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $200,000)

The North Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory (NLCL) provides high quality criminalistics services to law enforcement and criminal justice agencies within 29 parishes of the state of Louisiana. The NLCL is requesting DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction grant funds to increase the capacity of the forensic DNA laboratory to process more DNA samples, thereby helping to reduce the number of forensic DNA samples awaiting analysis and decrease a backlog of forensic DNA cases. The lab is proposing to add or maintain service contracts for critical instruments used for DNA analysis, upgrade outdated thermal cyclers, add camera lenses to examination labs, and add iPads to assist with DNA evidence submission and DNA meeting purposes. The laboratory is also requesting funds to provide analysts with the FBI QAS required continuing education for eight DNA analysts and maintenance for LabFx, the DNA case-tracking system.
