Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $719,951)

The primary objective of the project proposed by the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory (MSFL) is to increase efficiency of sexual assault kit processing and improve capacity thereby reducing the turnaround time and backlog of unworked cases and database samples. In order to meet the goal of the 2019 DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction Program, the MSFL will use funds to support a Forensic Scientist III, Forensic Biologist I, Forensic Biologist Trainee, and a Forensic Lab Technician as well as the Information Technology position (Lead Systems Specialist) for the DNA Bioscience Unit. A Rapid DNA machine is needed to provide efficient analyses of known casework reference samples and known database samples for CODIS verifications. The laboratory will also outsource DNA database samples and purchase collection kits for database samples.
