Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $600,000)

Partners:  The Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), along with primary partners Center for Court Innovation Tribal Justice Exchange (CCI), National Tribal Criminal Justice Center with Fox Valley Technical College (NCJTC) and the National Tribal Judicial College (NTJC), propose to provide consistent, culturally relevant, comprehensive and user-friendly delivery of TTA to BJA and OVW grantees and OLJ as they develop strategies to respond to precipitous increases in crime at the tribal level, especially violent crime.

Experience: The partners have worked collaboratively for more than a decade to provide TTA focusing on court planning, diversionary programming, code development, strategic planning, tribal civil and criminal legal assistance, victims of crime, child sexual abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault.  The partnership has evolved through a series of federally funded grant projects wherein the partnering agencies provided TTA to tribes nationwide. Partners have experience providing TTA to an array of tribal audiences and disciplines through in person training, online opportunities and publications.  Each partner has developed internal procedures to evaluate and report to funding agencies.

TTA: Key activities include a TTA needs assessment, on-site TTA, distance learning, judicial training, support for national conferences, establishment of online communities of practice and support for Operation Lady Justice Task force efforts, including a community of practice for tribal law enforcement.

The following provides an overview of project goals and objectives:

GOAL 1: To provide proactive technical assistance to assist grantees and target audience in meeting the goals and objectives of their grant funding.

Objective 1: Provide overall project oversight and coordinated outreach to grantees and target audience.

Objective 2: Provide TA to target audience and support their efforts to successfully plan and implement strategies and programs to address precipitous increase in crime, particularly violent crime in their tribal community.
