Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $499,981)

Under this program, BJA provides funding to help defray the costs associated with postconviction DNA testing for violent felony offenses (as defined by state law) in which actual innocence might be demonstrated.

Funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance will enable CUNY Law, Legal Aid Society, and the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science to launch a replicable national model that reduces incarceration through postconviction testing of DNA evidence. This model has the two-fold goal of educating a cadre of lawyers prepared for a lifetime of postconviction work and achieving exoneration by use of DNA
evidence.
