Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $497,229)
Under this program, BJA provides funding to help defray the costs associated with postconviction DNA testing for violent felony offenses (as defined by state law) in which actual innocence might be demonstrated.
The Committee for Public Counsel Services seeks to complete the Massachusetts statewide hair review and strengthen the ability to identify cases in which postconviction DNA testing can reveal wrongful convictions. The Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, the Boston Police Department Crime Lab, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab propose to increase staffing and the availability of overtime funding in order to build the capacity of these agencies to identify and evaluate violent felony cases in which postconviction DNA testing could reveal factual innocence.
