Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2020, $390,504)

Under this program, BJA provides funding to help defray the costs associated with postconviction DNA testing for violent felony offenses (as defined by state law) in which actual innocence might be demonstrated.

The North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission is seeking funding in an effort to provide an additional source of funding for the review, investigation, and testing of grant qualifying cases. The three main goals of this proposal include:

(1) Review claims of actual innocence where DNA analysis could prove actual innocence. (2) Search for, locate, and collect biological evidence in cases where DNA analysis could prove actual innocence.
(3) Provide the most appropriate and scientifically advanced DNA testing in postconviction cases where DNA analysis could prove actual innocence.
