Abstract

This brief by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the Forensics TTA Program discusses Forensics Unit Programs. Through these programs, BJA seeks to strengthen America’s communities by supporting state, local, and tribal jurisdictions to overcome challenges faced by the criminal justice system. The BJA provides federal funding through a number of forensic science programs to combat violent crime, resolve cases, lower recidivism, increase public safety, and enhance justice. Programs discussed in this publication include the DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program, the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Program, the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants (Coverdell) Program, the Postconviction Testing of DNA Evidence (Postconviction) Program, the Prosecuting Cold Cases Using DNA (COLD) Program, the Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner (ME/C) System Program, and the Missing and Unidentified Human Remains (MUHR) Program.
