This second of eight checklists for developing an evidence-based criminal justice and mental health collaboration program provides guidance in identifying the problem to be solved, examining the need for the selection of an evidence-based practice (EBP), and ensuring that several EBPs are considered before selecting and implementing one or more.

Abstract

The checklist has five components. The first component focuses on identifying the problem to be addressed by the EBPs by conducting a gap analysis, service and process inventory, or similar analysis of resources that will determine the need for the EBP. The second component of the checklist is an evaluation of potential EBPs for addressing the identified problems. The third component of the checklist addresses the selection of an EBP that is consistent with existing efforts to address criminogenic risks and/or behavioral health needs. The fourth component of the checklist involves ensuring the selected EBP addresses the criminogenic risks and behavioral health needs identified. The fifth component of the checklist is to identify champions for the implementation initiative in each participating agency. They should be selected for their ability to highlight the EBP and rally agency staff and external stakeholders to support the EBP. For each of the five checklist components, suggestions are offered for implementing it. 5 annotated resource listings
