Abstract
This fact sheet describes various types of cyberbullying and discusses the ways in which law enforcement can take a proactive approach to cyberbullying through training; collaborating with school administrators, parents, teachers and student associations; and by providing community outreach to teach communities how to prevent and respond to cyberbullying. Recommendations for police action include: become familiar with State laws (49 States have bullying laws, 40 States have laws that address electronic harassment, and 14 States specifically mention cyberbullying); self-educate, and educate the community; teach children, parents, school officials, and others how to prevent and respond to cyberbullying; collaborate with school administrators and parent, teacher, and student associations; train officers; and share information with other law enforcement agencies.
