Annotation

After reviewing the penalties for a business that does not register with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), this brief report indicates the information needed to report federal violations of NMVTIS legislation and how to make the report.

Abstract

Under NMVTIS regulations, all entities that manage five or more automobiles, including junk yards and salvage yards, must provide NMVTIS with information on each automobile obtained in whole or in part in the prior month. This report explains how law enforcement and vehicle title investigators can access NMVTIS data and other pertinent vehicle information at no cost through the Department of Justice Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS). The NMVTIS Law Enforcement Access Tool (LEAT) enables access to NMVTIS data and other pertinent vehicle information at no cost. LEAT contains a vehicle identification number (VIN) analyzer that provides vehicle details and enables a police officer to report violations directly to the U.S. Department of Justice. Other issues addressed in this report are how to determine whether a business is registered to report to NMVTIS and how a consumer can obtain a NMVTIS vehicle history report.
