This document provides information on video and video data evidence.

Abstract

All law enforcement agencies, regardless of size, can use these best practices and resources to improve their ability to maximize video evidence, not just in major incidents, but also in their daily efforts to solve crime and protect the citizens and their communities. This document establishes guidelines and resources to improve an agency's ability to properly secure, catalog, store, and maintain its video evidence. It also refers agencies to the top resources in the field for information on how best to appropriately utilize and manage video data while maintaining its evidentiary value and integrity. Following an introduction and background on video data evidence, the document discusses the many quality products currently available to assist law enforcement with video processes and procedures, including: tools for video retrieval in the field; available guidance for storing video files; tools to analyze video evidence; tools to enable and assist community businesses in sharing video evidence; and available training programs or resources.
