Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $4,294,675)

The Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) will continue to provide training and technical assistance to the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program. GREAT is a school-based life skills competency course taught by uniformed law enforcement officers and other criminal justice professionals. GREAT is designed to encourage youth to develop positive attitudes toward law enforcement officers, avoid conflicts, be responsible, set positive goals, and resist peer pressure. IIR will continue coordination and logistical support for the national training program, national policy and planning meetings, representational support at national conferences, and a field liaison program. They will also be responsible for: the production and dissemination of informational and educational materials; maintenance of administrative databases and the GREAT Web site; and, provision of officer scholarships.
