Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2009, $21,586)
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local governments, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
The disparate jurisdictions consisting of the Borough of Chambersburg and Franklin County have applied jointly for the Fiscal Year 2009 JAG award in the amount of $21,586 to support law enforcement activity and technology upgrades. The Borough of Chambersburg will serve as the fiscal agent, and Franklin County signed the required MOU indicating that Franklin County will not be sharing in this grant and will allow the total allocation to be used by the Borough of Chambersburg for its police department. The Chambersburg Police Department will utilize the funds to support its technology improvement program with the purchase of computers, a K-9 reporting system, and installation cost, including the cost of parts and labor. The borough is also supporting its law enforcement program with the purchase of firearms equipment, portable ballistic shield, rain gear for the Special Emergency Team, and tactical communications equipment.
