This fact sheet describes and presents data on the goals and achievements of the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).

Abstract

Funded by the U.S. Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), SAKI aims to create a coordinated community response that promotes the healing of survivors of sexual assault and ensures the just resolution of sexual assault cases through a comprehensive and victim-centered approach, building jurisdictional capacity to prevent accumulation of unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs) in the future, and supporting the investigations and prosecution of cases for which SAKs were previously unsubmitted. Data on SAKI achievements address the numbers of SAKs inventoried, sent for testing, and tested to completion; DNA profiles uploaded; CODIS hits; investigations; cases charged; convictions; CODIS hits to serial sex offenders; and CODIS hits to serial violent offenders. Data are also provided on money invested in SAKI sites, SAKI training and technical assistance, and SAKI program evaluation. This report also indicates the number of SAKI sites that are statewide, citywide, countywide, multi-county, and district. Website addresses are provided for various activities of the SAKI team.
